Biira's story
Biira, 13, is one of the many beneficiaries of the epilepsy program. Before access to medical treatment, Biira and her family relied on traditional herbal remedies for many years for management of her seizure with very little improvement and continued to get several seizures attacks throughout day and unable to go to school regularly which impacted her school grades negatively.
Her life changed when her mother, while vending vegetables in the market, overheard a conversation about the KCDC epilepsy clinic offering free services supported by Accomplish. Although she initially forgot the exact clinic dates, she later visited the clinic on a wrong date and was advised to return on the scheduled routine epilepsy clinic date. On the way to the epilepsy clinic, Biira had a seizure that lasted at least 20 minutes causing panic and fear for her life and missing the clinic appointment but arrived when the clinic was still going on.
Biira attended the epilepsy clinic in April 2025, but unfortunately had another seizure while attending the clinic. This caused more panic and fear but with all the experts around, the seizure was quickly controlled and mum reassured. This also offered the clinical offer an opportunity to directly observe and conduct a thorough medical assessment on Biira. She was offered appropriate care and management using carbamazepine tablets, instruction on how to give the medication, education on dos and don’ts during a seizure and seizure triggers plus the importance of drug adherence.
Since the initial treatment, Biira has remained seizure-free for the last 3 years consecutively. Her condition has improved so significantly, now attending school and monthly routine epilepsy clinic regularly and independently without her mother’s assistance.
